Point Cloud to CAD
A point cloud is a set of data points in a co-ordinate system. In relation to a three dimensional co-ordinate system, these points are usually defined by X, Y and Z co-ordinates, intended to represent the external surface of an object. Point cloud can be created by 3D scanners. These devices measure a large amount of points on an object’s surface, and frequently output a point cloud as a data file.
Point clouds are directly usable in industrial metrology or inspection using industrial computed tomography. The point cloud of a manufactured part can be aligned to a CAD model and compared to check for differences. Point cloud can help improve accuracy when doing 3D laser scanning.
