What Is Building Information Modelling?
Building Information Modelling (BIM) offers a wide range of different benefits, including being a single resource for information about a facility, making it a reliable way to make decisions during a building’s life cycle.
Although the concept of BIM has existed since the 1970s, it’s only now we have the software which can revolutionise the building industry.
The use of BIM technology goes beyond the planning and design phase of a project. Indeed, it can be used throughout a building’s life cycle, including supporting processes like cost management, project management, construction management and facility operations.
This technique is used all over the world, including in Hong Kong, which has set a target for full BIM implementation in 2015. Here in the UK, the government’s Chief Construction Adviser has called for BIM use on all projects costing over £5 million. The amount of BIM adoption has already increased from 13% in 2010 to 48% in 2014.
